Ohio Workers’ Compensation: How the Ohio BWC is handling COVID-19

workers compensation coronavirus covid-19

Information from the Ohio Association for Justice reveals that, as of today, there have been 149 occupational disease claims for COVID-19 filed with the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC).

The Ohio BWC has:

  • Approved five claims
  • Dismissed 21 claims
  • Denied one claim
  • 118 pending cases

Of these claims:

  • 114 are healthcare workers (including police, fire, and emergency medical technicians)
  • 24 are non-healthcare workers

The BWC will consider the allowance of the claim as long as an attending physician opines the condition was probably contracted in the course of employment.

Currently, the BWC is not requiring a positive COVID-19 test.
